by angela Here's a little fic for Halloween. It's sappy happy werewolf fic. No angst but there is sap. Mild Fraser/Vecchio slash rating PG-13 Summary - Werewolf Fraser bites his lover Ray Vecchio...fun ensues... Thanks to sansets for beta. Crossposted to DSAD. Aingeal By the Light of the Full Moon by angela Fraser stared at the paperwork on his desk. He wasn't able to focus on this particular mind-numbing task, his mind was elsewhere. He caught a glimpse of red serge out of the corner of his eye. He didn't look up, he didn't need to he knew who it was who was standing there. His father never knocked. Maybe ghosts just didn't. "You seem a bit upset, son." Fraser glanced up at his father who was now standing in front of his desk. 'I am, Dad." "Ah." "Aren't you going to ask why?" Fraser needed to talk with someone about this. "Well you know men...feelings...It's never a good mix. But you seem to want me to listen, so...go ahead," his father gestured. Fraser sighed. 'I bit Ray." "I don't see what the problem is son." "Dad, I'm a werewolf. I bit Ray." "So you're worried he's going to become a werewolf?" "Yes, I am." Fraser was very worried indeed. "It might not happen you know, son. Your mother bit me plenty of times and it never affected me." "Dad!" Fraser tried to keep his voice down. 'I didn't need to know that." He paused. 'Mum wasn't a werewolf, Dad. It only afflicts the male members of her family." "Strange thing if you ask me. It was probably the water." "The water?" "Well, your maternal great grandfather drank from a well, next thing you know he's got four legs and a tail." "It goes back further than that, Dad. Wasn't that the reason they emigrated?" Fraser asked. "The water?" "The werewolf tendency." "Could be, your mother never really spoke of it much. What were you doing when you bit the Yank?" "We were...well we were erm..." Fraser stopped. Talking about things like this with his father had never been easy. "You were what?" "Having intimate relations," Fraser said in a strained voice knowing he was blushing brighter than his uniform. "You've got that far and you haven't told him you're a werewolf?" "Not yet." "Well you should! It's just a week until the next full moon." "I know." "You've...you know with people before." "Yes, Dad." "So why do you think the yank might be affected? What's different?" Fraser sighed. 'It's a feeling..." "There you are, never trust a feeling, Son." "It's more than that, Dad. Ray and I became very good friends very quickly and there's a connection between us." "Ah, you're just caught up in your feelings, Son." "I was caught up in my feelings when Victoria came." "You were. Did she ever...?" "No. Victoria wasn't affected." "Are you sure, Son?" "Yes, Dad. Maybe it was because she was female. I know I didn't have this feeling about her." "Seems a bit of a flimsy reason to me, Benton." "I can't really explain it, dad. When Ray and I were engaged in intimate relations I felt something..." "Yes, well, that's normal, Son." "Not that something, something else." "Well you should tell him, maybe he can tell you he felt something." "Maybe." Sadly his father was unable to offer any advice on how exactly to tell Ray the truth. Fraser continuing staring at his paperwork trying to come up with an answer. Perhaps he was being over cautious. He hadn't seen any evidence Ray been affected - it was silly to assume Ray would be a werewolf. **************************************** ***************************** Later that evening Fraser decided to observe Ray closely and look for possible signs he'd been affected. Dinner provided Fraser with the perfect opportunity. He waited anxiously for Ray to order. After perusing the menu for several minutes Ray had made up his mind. 'Hey, Benny, I think I'm going to order the steak." "Are you sure, Ray? The...salad looks quite good." Fraser had tried to pick something as far away from meat as possible. He knew salad wouldn't be on a werewolf menu. But Ray's reaction however was not what he had intended. 'Are you saying I should go on a diet?" "Ah no, Ray, not at all," Fraser said hastily, hoping that perhaps Ray was in the mood for a steak It didn't have to mean anything. The waiter came over to take their order. 'What can I get you gentlemen?" "I'll have the steak," Ray said very deliberately. "And how would you like it cooked sir?" "Rare." Warning bells went off for Fraser. 'You're having it rare, Ray?" Ray rolled his eyes. 'Benny, it's a steak and yeah I feel like having it rare." "Ah." "What?" "Nothing, Ray," Fraser cleared his throat. 'Could I have the same please?" "Certainly," the waiter replied. He wrote down their order and left. "You're having rare steak now?" "Yes, Ray it sounded...yummy." Fraser was telling the truth. He was a werewolf and he did like his meat rare. Ray looked puzzled. 'Benny, are you feeling okay?" "Fine, Ray. Are you?" "What?" "Are you feeling fine?" "Great, Benny." Ray looked puzzled. "Then we're both fine." "Yeah." "How's the robbery case going?" Fraser said to change the subject. He watched Ray throughout their meal. Ray had indeed pretty much wolfed down the entire steak. Fraser knew it wasn't proof he'd turned Ray into a werewolf but it did nothing to reassure him. ********************************************************************* Over the next few days Fraser continued to observe Ray's behaviour and the evidence gradually built up. There had been the afternoon when Fraser had dropped by the station to hear and Ray had complained about a smell he normally would have ignored. "Hey, Benny - do you smell that?" "Smell what?" "That cologne smell. Wow, it's strong." "I believe it's Detective Huey's new cologne." "Yeah, well, it stinks." "Perhaps not to certain people. In fact there have been studies done on the nature of natural human pheromones and..." Fraser had continued along those lines in the hope that Ray would forget the smell. Of course it wasn't just Ray's sense of smell as Fraser found out the next day. "I wish they would shut up" "Who, Ray? "Patowski and McMillian. They've been talking so loudly all day that they gave me headache." "Ah." "And when I told Welsh he didn't think they were. At least he's got walls to keep the noise down." Their love making had also been affected. Both men had seemed to want to make love more often and when they did...well there had been a lot of tasting and touching going on, more so than might have been expected. Not that Fraser was complaining in that front. There had also been Ray's growling. Fraser knew a werewolf growl when he heard it and Ray had been making such noises when they made love. Ray hadn't even been aware of it when Fraser had asked. "You were louder tonight, Ray." "Louder? Than what?" "Louder than usual." "Ah come on, Benny it's not like I was howling." That hadn't been the only thing. Ray had been perfectly happy to make love on the floor, without a bedroll and without making one comment about it. He'd also started eating with his hands. The night that they had dinner at Ray's family home even his mother had been puzzled. Then there had been the reaction of animals, cats they ran into in alleyways openly hissed at Ray. Ray had even commented his neighbours' cat had started doing it so Fraser knew it wasn't his own presence. It wasn't just cats either. Dogs seemed to take a dislike to Ray, barking when he passed. He'd had terrible trouble when he needed to use K9 division dogs on a case, they seemed to spend all their time staring or barking or barking at Ray. Fraser had been most worried by the dense patches of hair that would suddenly appear on Ray's hands. He'd scratch the skin frequently but never seemed to notice the hair itself which disappeared as quickly as it appeared. Now Fraser was sat in his office reviewing all the evidence. If it was a case there would be no doubt about the outcome, Ray Vecchio was a werewolf. His thoughts were once again disturbed by his father, who had remained unhelpful throughout the last week, not that there was any change there. "So what do you think, son?" "Ray is exhibiting all the characteristics of a werewolf. He's developed a taste for rare meat, his senses of smell and hearing have definitely improved, he seems to create a hostile response in certain animals, he'll growl and then there's hair that appears on his hands. He also seems to suffer irritation to his skin, very much like I did." "Well you'll find out tonight, it's a full moon." Fraser sighed heavily. 'I know, Dad. I have to tell him. I don't know if I should tell him about me or the both of us. Should I tell him at once?" "You mean tell him he's a werewolf and then wait to see if it happens?" "I'm fairly confident it will happen but I don't want to put Ray through a lot of stress." "And turning into a werewolf won't put him through stress? "If I tell him it might make things worse." "I remember the night your mother told me about you, of course I didn't believe her until that first full moon. You remember that one son? When you were four years old?" Fraser shifted uncomfortably in his chair under his father's gaze. 'I remember it Dad. I spent the night howling in my room" "Of course I had to believe your mother then. I didn't want to though. When you started being able to control it, even when there wasn't a full moon, I couldn't really deny it." "You've never liked the fact I'm a werewolf have you?" "I did have some concerns about whether it would affect your chances of having children. But there isn't much chance of that now is there?" "No, Dad there isn't." "You've still got to tell him, Son." "I will Dad," Fraser replied, getting up his chair. The day was nearly over, but fortunately the sun wouldn't be setting just yet and he would have time to get Ray back to his apartment. What Fraser was going to tell him he was still figuring out. . ****************************************************************** Ray was his usual punctual self when he picked Fraser up. They didn't talk much on the way to the apartment, though Fraser tried his best at small talk whilst trying to work out how he was going to tell Ray about him, about them. By the time they pulled up outside Fraser's apartment building he knew he could delay the moment no longer. "Are you okay, Benny?" Ray asked. Fraser had been sitting silent for a good few minutes since they pulled up. "Ray, we need to talk." "Sure." "I need your help and it's a task that might take all night." Ray smiled. 'Benny, if you want me to stay over just say so." "I do want you to stay over." "See it wasn't so hard was it? We'll order in, maybe I'll let you beat me at Scrabble again and then we can...." His voice trailed off with a smile. "Sounds a good idea, Ray." Ray grinned. Fraser tried to smile back through his nervousness but it didn't work. Diefenbaker greeted them as they entered the apartment. He'd been with Willie for most of the day. He knew all about tonight and sensed the tension so he went to curl up by his spot by the window. "So, Benny, what do you want tonight? Chinese? Pizza?" "I'd like to talk first," Fraser replied. "Okay, Benny." Ray waited. "Ray, please sit down," Fraser gestured to the chair. Ray sat down with a puzzled look on his face. Fraser took up the chair at the opposite end of the small kitchen table. 'I have something important to tell you, Ray and it's not easy." He paused to take a breath 'We've known each other some time now. Our relationship has expanded beyond what I could have dreamed about but there's something I've been keeping from you." Fraser glanced at his clasped hands. "What? You have a wife somewhere?" Ray was joking Fraser knew but what he had to tell Ray was no joke. 'You're the only person in my life I feel for in that way. No, Ray, I feel I should tell you what I am." "You're a Mountie I know that, Fraser." "I am...but that's only one thing I am." "Canadian?" "Ray, please this isn't easy." "Sorry, Benny," Ray said. The apology was genuine. Fraser took a deep breath. 'Ray, I'm a werewolf." For a moment there was silence and then Ray started to laugh. 'Okay, Benny, that's good joke." "I'm perfectly serious, Ray. I am a shape shifter. I turn into a wolf at the full moon although I can control my transformation at other times. I can choose to take the form of a wolf, until a full moon when I am forced to take on the wolf form." "You're not serious?" "I'm perfectly serious." Fraser looked into Ray's eyes, never flinching. "Come on, Benny werewolves are in the movies." "Myth springs from truth, Ray." "So when the sun sets you'll turn into a wolf?" Fraser nodded. 'Yes, Ray. And I'm not sure I should tell you but... "But what?" "I bit you and..." "What you think I'm going to turn into a wolf? You have to be joking, Benny." "I'm perfectly serious." "Well, the sun looks like it's setting now so let's just wait." Ray leaned back in his chair "You don't believe me?" "Would you believe me?" "Yes, Ray." "Ah come on you wouldn't." "I would, Ray," Fraser replied with sincerity. They continued to argue the point as the sun set. Before either of them knew it, the sun was set and the moon had risen. Fraser was well prepared for this, having gone through it many, many times before. He was worried about Ray though. Ray was in the middle of asking about Canadian naiveté Fraser hadn't really being listening because he was aware he was about to change. Suddenly Ray's tone changed. "Fraser, I feel funny. Is it hot in here...oh God." Ray fell off the chair and landed on the floor. Fraser closed his eyes. 'Just keep calm, Ray. Everything will be fine." "Benny!" he heard Ray scream his name. Fraser couldn't remember anything else. The world went black. ********************************************************************* Ray groaned. He didn't know what had just happened. He knew he was sprawled on the floor. Had he fainted? He could hear Benny's worried sounded voice. "Ray, are you okay?" Ray slowly opened his eyes to find a wolf looking at him. A wolf with very familiar blue eyes. "Benny?" he gulped as the wolf nodded. 'Benny?! Oh God you are a wolf! I mean look at you!" Fraser dipped his head. 'Ray, perhaps this is a good time to ask you to look at yourself." Ray glanced down at himself and swiftly stood up, on all fours. 'Fraser! I have fur! And four legs! And oh my God is that a tail?!" "Ray, calm down." "Calm down? Why should I calm down?! I look like Dief!" Fraser's voice was calm. 'Because we don't want the neighbours to hear." "What you don't want them to hear we're having a domestic? I think that's the least of our problems, Benny." "No, because the barking might make them think there's something odd going on." "There is something odd going on! I have four legs!" Ray paused. 'Wait - did you say barking?" "You don't think werewolves actually talk in the same way as humans do you?" "I don't know, Benny until a few minutes ago I was a human." Fraser seemed to be embarrassed even Ray could read that in the body language of a Benny with fur and four legs. 'Technically, Ray you've been a werewolf since I bit you. Although I'm not entirely sure if it was the bite or the actual physical act of making love that created this transformation..." "Are you saying we should have practiced safer sex?! And why didn't you tell me before we did it you were a werewolf?" "I didn't want you to get upset, Ray." "And I'm not upset now?" Was Ray growling? "I was hoping you were just shocked." Ray pouted; at least he thought it was a pout. It was difficult to tell with these wolf lips. 'Well I am. I'm also upset." "It's not an easy thing to tell people, Ray, not even those closest to me. You didn't believe me." Even as a wolf, the look on Benny's face was one of sadness Ray knew that. 'I didn't, did I? God I'm sorry, Benny." "It's understandable, Ray." "Am I stuck like this?" "Until dawn, yes." "DAWN?!" A voice form the corner spoke up. 'Will you two keep it quiet? Some of us are trying to sleep." Ray stared at the white form curled up under the window. 'Oh my God, Dief?" "What?" came the reply. "I can understand him." "Of course, Ray, Diefenbaker is a wolf." "Who is trying to get some sleep." "I'm sorry Diefenbaker but you see, Ray..." Dief interrupted. 'I said you should have explained to him before the two of you decided to mate but you didn't listen." Ray gulped. 'You knew about...?" "I've lived with Benton Fraser for years. I've known he was werewolf since I met him." "Great I'm talking to a deaf...wait isn't Dief deaf?" "I am." "So how come you can hear me?" Ray asked. 'Oh why am I thinking about that when I find out I've become a werewolf?" "Perhaps your psyche..." Ray wasn't ready for a Mountie lecture on werewolves and Freud. 'Fraser, were you bitten as a child?" "No, I've always been like this." "Always?" Fraser nodded. 'Since I was born, Ray. Although the transformations didn't really manifest themselves regularly until I reached puberty. I suppose the hormonal changes around that time helped make the transformations more cyclic." "So you weren't bitten?" "No, Ray. Contrary to belief some werewolves - the good ones of us anyway - are just born like that. It runs in families. In my case, my mother's family." "But you bit me." "Yes." "And either that or the sex made me..." "Yes. Although it was possibly the combination. This hasn't actually happened to me before." "So you've had sex before and you've bitten people before and they haven't become werewolves?" "Yes, Ray. Although it could be they weren't male or that they didn't have a tendency toward it. Some people seem predisposed to the transformation." Ray felt himself bristling slightly, literally. 'You're saying I am?" "It's possible, Ray and it does make sense given the fact..." "I've traded my Armani in for fur?" "Yes." "There isn't a cure?" "I'm sorry, Ray - it is permanent." "Oh great." "Ray?" Ray looked at his suit which was now ripped to shreds and covered in hair. It would have to go in the dumpster come morning. 'You realise you've ruined another suit?" "Sorry, Ray." Ray sighed. 'Look, Benny, of all the weirdness you've got me into, this is the weirdest, okay? But... there's nothing we can do, so being mad at you isn't going to do anything. I'm not happy about this Benny, but you are what you are and now I am what you are..." Ray paused. 'Oh God - you've turned me into a Canadian!" "In what sense?" "I should be freaking out right now and I'm not." "And this bothers you, Ray?" "Yes!" "I can imagine it must be disconcerting." "Disconcerting?! It's more than that!" "Perhaps we should go." "Go where? We can't just go about Chicago looking like this." Ray took another glance at himself. "If we wait a few hours we can. Diefenbaker and I often take walks in the local park." "You do?" Dief stretched out a bit and yawned. 'Yeah, he drags me out every full moon. It gets boring." "Are you coming?" "I can't really leave the two of you on your own. Not with Ray like he is." "Hey! What's that supposed to mean?" Dief cocked his head. 'I was just suggesting that because you aren't used to walking with four legs and fur. Although it suits you. You look good as a wolf." To Ray's surprise Fraser bristled and growled. 'Diefenbaker!" "Benton Fraser! I didn't mean anything by it. I was not making advances to your mate." "Ewww – Dief! I really didn't want that image," Ray said scrunching up his nose. "I'm sorry Diefenbaker, I seem to be particularly..." "Jumpy?" Dief suggested. "Protective of Ray." "Ah geez, Benny. You're still a sap." Benny smiled. 'Thank you Ray." "Hey what? You're licking me now?! Hmm...that's nice actually." It was indeed to feel a wet tongue rubbing across his fur covered...what was it? A snout? A muzzle? Ray licked Benny back. It was weird, but for some reason it felt right. Fraser nuzzled his neck and Ray nuzzled back. This wasn't so bad. They were interrupted by a rather annoyed sounding Diefenbaker. "Do you two ever stop?" Ray separated himself from Fraser. 'Sorry Dief, guess we got carried away." "Dief was right - you are an attractive wolf." "Well you're pretty good looking yourself, you know considering..." Ray stopped for a moment. 'I don't believe I just said that." "Me either," Dief said. "So what are we going to do?" "You don't want to go out, Ray?" "Benny, I just want to get used to this before we go out and scare the inhabitants of Chicago." "Ah. All right, Ray." Ray tried to explain. 'I mean I have things I didn't have before and walking on four legs is harder than it looks." "Actually I find two legs harder despite the fact I spend more time with two legs." "Yeah, and when I stumble through the door tomorrow morning Ma is going to think I'm drunk." "What will you tell your mother?" "Benny, I haven't told her about us yet. This is going have to wait." "Ah." Ray knew Fraser was watching as he got up and tried to learn how to put one foot in front of the other. "You know, you are getting better, Ray." Ray felt his side connect with furniture. 'I just hit a table." "It's endearing." Ray was sure Dief rolled his eyes. 'There you go, getting mushy again." "And what you never got mushy with Maggie?" Ray retorted. "That was different," came the reply. "You did give her flowers on Valentine's Day. And chocolates," Fraser noted. "Alright, so I did." "Please don't sulk, Dief." "I'm not sulking, Benton Fraser." "Ah, my mistake." Ray continued to wobble around. Unfortunately, Fraser's kitchen area was filled with more furniture than the rest of the apartment. 'Ouch!" "Ray, are you alright?" "Fine, Benny. I just hit the chair." "You're doing fine." "I don't feel fine." "You'll get used to it." "I guess so." After all - he hadn't fallen on his butt recently. He was making progress. "I'll help you, Ray. After all, werewolves mate for life." Ray smiled. Well, he thought it was a smile. Benny looked like he was smiling. 'Really?" "Really." "I think I'll leave you two alone," Dief said. "Diefenbaker?" "I'll be back in the morning," he called as he went out of the window. "Benny?" "Yes, Ray?" "I think I've got fleas." ********************************************************************* The next morning Ray found that he was naked lying on Fraser's bed with his...Ray paused for a moment. What were they now, aside from not being human? Mates? Lying here with skin against skin Ray was wondering if last night had all been a dream. Then he felt some gentle licking from Fraser on the back of his neck. Well, maybe this werewolf thing wasn't too bad after all.
